Volunteer Spotlight
Behind every meal we pack for families in Kansas City is someone who chose to make a difference.
Our volunteers are the heart of Pete's Garden. Whether they are packing meals, recovering food, or lending a helping hand wherever it is needed, they make it possible for thousands of Kansas City families to enjoy wholesome, ready to eat meals each year.
At Pete's Garden we are proud to shine a spotlight on one of the incredible people who gives their time, talent, and heart to our mission. Get to know our Volunteer Spotlight who is helping us reduce food waste, feed families, and strengthen our community, one meal at a time.

Carol Kane
The one that always shows up
Carol volunteers weekly, and often saying “yes” when we need last-minute extra hands. From prepping appetizers for our first fundraiser to sharing insights from her volunteer work with other organizations, and even helping a student by participating in a high school Capstone project interview.
Her generosity, kindness, and wonderful personality make her a shining light in our efforts to reduce food waste and feed families.
We are so grateful for Carol and her time at Pete’s Garden!
Here’s a little more about Carol, in her own words:
How did you get started at Pete’s Garden and what inspires you to volunteer here?
In October 2022, one of my neighbors introduced me to Pete’s Garden and the Jewish Family Services Food Pantry. Both organizations focus on addressing food insecurity, and I’m forever grateful to have found these volunteer opportunities. I’ve made new friends, and at the end of each shift, I know that families will enjoy the meals we’ve packed. One of the coolest things is packing food on Monday and then seeing a guest at the JFS food pantry select a Pete’s Garden meal on Tuesday. It’s a perfect plan.
Are there other ways you give to your community?
I have several non-profits that I support - Heart of America Shakespeare, Fire Foundation, Harvesters, and PBS.
What interests you when not volunteering?
My favorite PBS Masterpiece series are Grantchester, Unforgotten, Endeavor, Call the Midwife, and Magpie Murder
Something that you might not know about Carol:
I’m a political nerd. I read Punchbowl morning update every morning, stay up until the bitter end on election night, and often write to my elected representatives and share my views.
It’s great being a small part of Pete’s Garden team. Hopefully I will be able to keep coming for a long time!
