Volunteer Spotlight

Behind every meal we pack for families in Kansas City is someone who chose to make a difference.

Our volunteers are the heart of Pete's Garden. Whether they are packing meals, recovering food, or lending a helping hand wherever it is needed, they make it possible for thousands of Kansas City families to enjoy wholesome, ready to eat meals each year.

At Pete's Garden we are proud to shine a spotlight on one of the incredible people who gives their time, talent, and heart to our mission. Get to know our Volunteer Spotlight who is helping us reduce food waste, feed families, and strengthen our community, one meal at a time.

John and Karen Martellaro

the couple that always gives together

How and when did you get started volunteering at Pete’s Garden?

John: I read about PG in Startland magazine as I was approaching retirement. It sounded like just the kind of volunteer opportunity I was seeking for the next phase of life. I started in August 2023.

Karen: When John suggested we start working with PG, I was excited because food insecurity is an important issue for me.

What inspires or motivates you to volunteer here?

John: During the 1990s I was food editor and restaurant critic for the Kansas City Star. I was actually paid a salary to eat at some of the finest restaurants in town, with the paper picking up the tab. I think that makes me the poster boy for nutritional privilege, so I embrace this opportunity to give back.

Karen: Knowing that I am providing meals for families in my community. As a young adult, I often found myself walking to work hungry, sacrificing so my young child could eat. I know that many mothers make those kinds of sacrifices so I want to do what I can to help.

Are there other ways you give to your community (other volunteerism, or other food waste prevention or passions?)

John: I provide monthly donations to causes I care about, including Kanbe's Markets and non-profit news sources such as KCUR and The Beacon.

Karen: I have "adopted" my elderly next door neighbor, a widow. I take out her trash, do her grocery shopping, pick up her medications and get her to appointments.

What’s your favorite (or least favorite) food item to pack?

John: Partially thawed frozen green beans. Frostbite awaits.

Karen: Smoked sliced pork and mashed potatoes in a tie. They both leave me with a big mess to clean up afterward.

What is your favorite “kitchen sink” meal (a meal to use some of your fridge or pantry items to help prevent food waste)?

John: Combining compatible leftovers with canned broth to make "surprise soups."

Do you have any suggestions for our Pete’s Garden community about some way that you fulfill our “less food waste, more family meals” mission outside of your hours as a volunteer at PG?

Karen: We talk about PG to our friends and people we meet at every opportunity. We also shop carefully so we don't throw very much food away.

What’s your go-to comfort food?

John: Spaghetti and meatballs

Karen: Ice Cream
